August 8th was Wareham Mayor's Civic Day (Walkabout). Fifty plus Mayors, Mayoresses, Chairmen and Escorts perambulated around Wareham, first visiting Lady St Mary Flower Festival.

Then via the scenic route to St Martin's on the north wall. Here Mrs Anne King gave a wonderfully informing talk on the church and its history through the ages. This was extremely well received.

Then back down North St. accompanied by the Sergeant at Mace, Nigel Spiller, the two Constables, Steward of the Court Leet, Robin Rowlands and other Leet members. The first port of call was the Leather quality tests, the meat at the Butchers, the Bread at the Anglebury Restaurant. Across to inspect the Toilets which the Mayor was pressed into doing. Through to the Duke of Wellington pub where the chimney peepers checked out the chimney. Followed by the ale taster and testing.

All this fun was gratefully received. The Mayor and Mayoress thanks go to all those that made this Day so special. To round off the day a T.E. Lawrence Special Cream Tea was enjoyed by all in the Anglebury Restaurant. During the tea the Mayor gave a rendition on the more unknown aspects of the life of T.E.Lawrence based on some material supplied by that wonderful local in the form of our own Hugh Elmes who unfortunately had to rush off to hospital. Thank goodness Hugh sailed through all the tests and will be back among us soon.
